This is Pauline Staski, principal of Ruidoso High
School. There has been a huge misunderstanding regarding music programs at
the high school. Mr. Flores’s and Mr. Shaver’s comments were premature. Let me
clarify. No decision has been made regarding the staffing of band and choir for
next year. This is why no one has received anything in writing. We are
waiting to see what pre-registration numbers for next year will be. I am
concerned about the low numbers of students that are choosing to participate in
these programs, and an apparently large number of students that ask to drop
music classes during the year. These low numbers mean that the music teachers do
not have an equitable teacher load compared to other teachers. We are
considering a variety of options. Regardless of how these programs are staffed
next year, we will still offer band, jazz band and choir, the same courses we
offered this year. We will be having a parent meeting on February
14th at 6:00 p.m. to discuss our options for the music program using
real numbers from pre-registered students. All interested parents, students, and
community members are encouraged to attend. The Jazz Band will perform. Thank
you for allowing me this chance to set the record straight.
