A Phoenix native who grew up in the Midwest, Terry was a lawyer before his long career in journalism.

Terry J. Fitzwater took over as publisher of the Ruidoso News on July 9, replacing Glenas Orcutt, who resigned in April to oversee a family of newspapers in Carlsbad, Calif., the News reported.

Fitzwater, 50, was born in Phoenix and grew up in Grand Rapids, Mich., graduating with honors from Central Michigan University and going on to Rutgers Law School, where he graduated in 1982, according to the News.

He worked as a lawyer in Denver for two years before entering the newspaper business, where he has served as a news reporter, columnist, sports writer and editor, editor, general manager and publisher of a number of newspapers.

Fitzwater has managed weeklies, shoppers and dailies and was executive director of Community Papers of Michigan, a state association of free papers with a combined circulation of more than 2 million, the News reported.

He currently owns Michigan Racing Scene, a Midwestern auto racing publication, the paper said.

"I am thrilled and excited to be in Ruidoso," said Fitzwater, who said his first priority is to meet with community residents and leaders and promised to have an open-door policy at the paper.

"Stop in and see me and let me know what you want in your great community newspaper," Fitzwater said.
